Where to watch House of the Dragon
HBO Max. Which was Max. Which was HBO Max. The show never moved; the sign on the door did.

House of the Dragon streams on HBO Max. Seasons one and two are complete at eighteen episodes; season three is airing weekly, six of its eight out as this was written.
Why you couldn't find it
Warner renamed HBO Max to Max in 2023, on the theory that the HBO brand scared off people who wanted reality television. In 2025 they changed it back, having concluded that the HBO brand was in fact the most valuable thing they owned.
Two rebrands in two years is enough to break anyone's muscle memory, and it's why search results, old articles and half the apps on your TV still disagree about the name. If you're looking for a purple app called Max, it's the same one.
What it costs, and the cheaper routes
HBO Max is $10.99 a month with ads and $18.49 without. The ad tier carries House of the Dragon in full, so the upgrade buys you quiet rather than access.
It also sells as an add-on channel through Prime Video, which bills through Amazon and folds the show into an app you already open. YouTube TV and Spectrum carry it inside larger packages.
Individual episodes and seasons are for sale from Apple TV and Fandango at Home if you want to own them rather than rent access.
Do you need to watch Game of Thrones first?
No. House of the Dragon is set roughly two centuries earlier and shares no characters. Starting here is completely viable, and some people argue it's the better introduction because it's a tighter story with fewer threads.
What you lose is the weight of certain names and places, which land harder if you know where the dynasty ends up. That's atmosphere, not comprehension. Game of Thrones is on the same service whenever you want it.
Where it is in the story
Twenty-four episodes so far, with season three still going out weekly. It adapts the Targaryen civil war from George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood, and unlike its predecessor it has a written ending to work towards. Whether that produces a better landing is the open question of the whole enterprise.
Two rebrands in two years, and the show never moved once. WhereWuhzai follows the service rather than the branding, whatever it ends up being called next.
